Silicon Cape

It is with great enthusiasm that I will be attending the launch of the Silicon Cape initiative early next month.

I' m not there for the food, nor the company (although I have no doubt they will be more than engaging). Nope, I am there to support what I believe is potentially one of the most important shifts in the collective consciousness of Cape IT and Web Professionals. A meeting of minds that was hinted at when CITI began, but never took off the way I believe this can.

Justin Stanford (of E-SET fame) and Vinny Lingham have taken a bold step in creating a community that exists online with the intention of pooling the minds of online professionals. It's important in the same way that the new studios being built near Somerset West are important to the burgeoning film industry in South Africa.

May it bring big business to the Cape. May it become the first port-of-call for those wishing to identify the talent that you and I see every day.

Most importantly though... may it reign for many years.

It's great to see this kind of interest developing out there on the web and the online buzz that's developed so far.

I think it's also important to point out that part of our developing this ecosystem will be not only to get the online marketeers/entrepreneurs together, but to get buy-in from the various government and regulatory parties and also my personal interest (no indication of relatively importance): helping educate the legal, accounting and other professionals and providing them with the knowledge for the legal, tax and other issues quite specific to technology and early stage investments and businesses.

Can we create an environment that acts like WD-40 instead of sand and grit? Let's make it happen!
